In November 1974, a driver and his passenger in Sarthe, France, observed a black tube-shaped object with three bright red areas. The object moved slowly and silently, hovering vertically before disappearing among the trees. The testimony, reported in 2008, described a several-minute experience that frightened the witnesses. Although the case was classified as category C by the GEIPAN, it was considered that the perception of a tube might have been an optical illusion caused by luminous points. It was suggested that they could have been lights carried by the wind, such as Thai lanterns, although this hypothesis could not be confirmed due to a lack of meteorological data and cultural context at the time.
