Summary

On the night of 7 June 1978, three fishermen near Port Vila saw a white light moving slowly before approaching them. At their level, they described a silent object with coloured flames trailing behind it. The object abruptly changed direction and disappeared. Other witnesses reported something similar that night, though their observations were likely attributed to a shooting star. The investigation ruled out aircraft, boats, balloons, and signalling. GEIPAN was unable to identify the phenomenon.
