Summary

On the night of August 20, 1978, around 22:50, five military personnel in Saint-Dizier (Haute-Marne) observed three luminous points moving erratically from the east. Within minutes the points merged into a single orange object that hovered over a building for about two minutes before vanishing northward. The object displayed abrupt stops and sudden accelerations while remaining completely silent, ruling out any confusion with stars or conventional aircraft. No other sightings were reported in the area that night. GEIPAN classified the case as D, meaning no conventional explanation was found.
