Around 19:15 on September 8, 1978, several witnesses in Corbeny heard a whistling sound followed by a loud noise from the sky. A farmer later discovered damage to his barn roof and found pieces of whitish ice of various sizes scattered around the area. The sky was overcast that day. The original block's diameter and total weight could not be determined because it shattered on impact. Some fragments were collected by witnesses; the rest melted without a trace. No similar events were reported in the region that day. Though rare, this type of ice fall is a recognized meteorological phenomenon.
