In January 1979, a witness in Hourtin (Gironde) observed an unusual luminous phenomenon. After a flash, they saw an orange light that initially remained stationary before slowly descending and growing in size. Suddenly, the object changed direction and sped away horizontally, disappearing without making any noise. The observation lasted 2 to 3 minutes, and no sound was heard throughout. The gendarmerie contacted the Florac Observatory, which suggested the hypothesis of a "ball lightning" phenomenon, but there were not enough data to confirm or reject this explanation.
