In 1979, French sailors observed a luminous phenomenon in the Ionian Sea. The object appeared as a bright point that suddenly split into three parts, changing colors between white and orange. It was moving rapidly toward the southeast and was visible for one minute. The witnesses couldn't identify the phenomenon, which could have been a re-entry into the atmosphere.
The exact location was 38.02°N and 17.41°E, a remote area of the Mediterranean. Although there was no official confirmation, the data suggest a possible satellite or space debris re-entry. The case was classified as "B" by the GEIPAN, indicating an observation without a clear explanation but with some coherence.
