Summary

In July 1979, two witnesses in Le Pouliguen (France) reported a luminous phenomenon with a halo of red, orange, and yellow colors in the night sky. The object, described as very large, initially appeared stationary before moving toward Saint-Nazaire and gradually disappearing. Despite efforts by authorities to gather more testimonies, no additional reports were received. After a detailed analysis using modern tools, the GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses likely observed the Moon. The Moon's low position, combined with partial clouds and mists, could have created the illusion of a dome-shaped object with changing colors. The witnesses accurately described optical effects such as the halo and apparent movement, which can be attributed to variations in the Moon's visibility.
