Between January 10 and 16, 1980, several people, including gendarmes, observed a bright, circular object in the sky above Le Croisic. The object shimmered and moved slowly from east to west. Photographs were taken of the phenomenon, and over time, the object gradually lost its brightness before disappearing. Authorities concluded that the object was Venus, which was particularly visible during that period. It reached a magnitude of -3.83 on January 12 at 19:04 and set in the ocean around 20:30.
