🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On January 1, 1980, a driver in Cannes observed a bright object in the night sky. The witness described it as a ball of string with black squares visible between the strands, leading them to believe it was something extraordinary. Using binoculars and taking photographs, the witness failed to capture any image on the negatives, which turned out blank. Despite the detailed description, no other witnesses came forward. The GEIPAN re-examined the case with modern tools and concluded that the object was Venus, visible in the sky but not recognized by the witness. The confusion is attributed more to the witness's interpretation than a visual error. Today, the case is classified as a misidentification of a known astronomical phenomenon.
