In May 1980, several witnesses, including gendarmes, observed a luminous phenomenon in the sky above Charleville-Mézières. Two red, circular objects slowly descended at a constant speed, followed by red flashes that rose before disappearing. Some even saw reddish smoke. The investigation concluded that the phenomenon was not of unknown origin, but rather the result of distress flares for boats that, while not used with bad intentions, were no longer safe for use at sea.
