🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
In December 1980, three witnesses in Chevreuse (Yvelines) observed a luminous, fast-moving object with a clear trajectory. Although only two were interviewed, their testimonies were considered sincere and credible. The GEIPAN, the French organization investigating unidentified aerial phenomena, re-examined this case years later using new tools and experience. The object's description matched the characteristics of an artificial atmospheric reentry, suggesting a possible confusion with a known space event.
The case fits within a mass observation of the reentry of the Cosmos 749 rocket, which occurred at the same time and direction. The witnesses' visual perception was not questioned, but rather their emotional interpretation of the event. Ultimately, the GEIPAN classified it as PAN A, indicating the case is linked to a misidentification, in this case with the reentry of Cosmos 749. This analysis shows how science can reinterpret past events with new data and tools.
