Roubaix 1981, observation of a fireball

Summary

On August 1, 1981, a driver in Roubaix observed a red fireball to the west that split into two. The light gradually faded, turning more orange, until it disappeared into the fog. No sound was heard during the observation. Two witnesses suggested it could be a sunset observation, although other elements of the case do not match this explanation.
