🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On June 10, 1982, in the Pays de la Loire region, several people, including airport control tower staff, observed a bright spot in the sky. The investigation revealed that pilots had also seen the same object. Although it initially raised some concern, it was determined to likely be a stratospheric balloon launched by CNES from Gap. After releasing its payload, the balloon drifted at high altitude, between 30 and 40,000 meters, pushed by southwest winds.
The case was classified as "B" by the GEIPAN, indicating it was not considered an unexplained phenomenon. However, the coincidence of multiple witnesses and the object's prolonged presence in the sky generated interest. Although there were no reports of physical effects or interactions with aircraft, the observation remains an example of how unusual celestial objects can spark curiosity and, in some cases, fear.
