On September 26, 1983, at 6:50 PM, hundreds of people across French Polynesia observed an unusual luminous phenomenon. Six to eight bright points of different sizes moved rapidly from west to east across the sky, leaving glowing trails behind. Their altitude was estimated at 10,000 meters. No sound was heard during the observation. Witnesses likely saw an atmospheric entry, such as a meteor.
Despite the lack of noise, the precision of the observations and the number of witnesses made this one of the most notable cases in the GEIPAN database. The B classification means a conventional explanation was not ruled out, but the event remains of interest to researchers of unexplained phenomena.
