On November 17, 1983, between 6:30 and 7:00 PM, witnesses in three French departments (Haute-Saône, Moselle, and Meurthe-et-Moselle) observed a luminous phenomenon crossing the sky. It was described as a round, very colorful mass moving horizontally at high speed and without any noise. The object was estimated to be at an altitude of 300 to 600 meters. Although no change in direction was noticed during the few seconds of observation, some witnesses saw the main mass explode into several fragments of unequal sizes and reddish tones. An orange-yellow trail was also visible behind the object. These witnesses likely observed the atmospheric entry of a meteorite.
