In October 1988, several witnesses in French Polynesia observed very bright white or orange-red balls in the sky. These lights followed a straight trajectory without making any noise. Initially classified as unexplained, the GEIPAN re-examined the case using modern tools and experience. They found that it matched the atmospheric re-entry of a rocket stage from the Raduga 22 satellite launch. The trajectory and timing matched data from NORAD, confirming the explanation.
The case review showed how modern technology and methodology can solve mysteries once deemed inexplicable. Although some testimonies were delayed, they helped determine the direction and duration of the event. While one account didn't align perfectly, others and aerial reports confirmed the explanation. The GEIPAN updated the classification to "A," indicating an atmospheric re-entry of a space object, closing the case with a solid scientific explanation.
