🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
In March 1989, several witnesses in France observed a luminous phenomenon in the cloud layers displaying colors such as yellow, green, and red. Initially classified as a natural phenomenon by the SEPRA, the case was later reviewed by the GEIPAN, which concluded it was a northern light. This phenomenon, rare in the region, was confirmed by astronomical observations and coincided with a solar eruption recorded at that time. The initial confusion was understandable, as northern lights are uncommon in the area, occurring roughly once every ten years.
The case review highlighted how technological advances and accumulated experience allow for the reinterpretation of previously unexplained phenomena. This case is an example of how what seems inexplicable can have a clear scientific explanation with the right analysis. The GEIPAN continues to review old cases to improve accuracy and provide more solid conclusions.
