Summary

On the night of August 27, 1997, several witnesses in the Lorraine region of France observed a green light ball crossing the sky at high speed. The light left an orange-yellow trail and the phenomenon was completely silent, lasting between 2 and 3 seconds. The testimonies coincided in several areas of the department, suggesting a coherent and not isolated observation. Although it could initially seem like an unidentified object, the characteristics of the phenomenon are compatible with the atmospheric entry of a celestial body, such as a meteorite or asteroid fragment.

The GEIPAN, the French organization responsible for investigating unidentified aerial phenomena, classified this case as "B", indicating that a conventional explanation was not ruled out. The description of a luminous ball with a trail and high speed fits what is known about meteors. However, the coincidence of multiple witnesses in different locations and the absence of noise add an element of mystery that keeps the case interesting for researchers of aerial phenomena.
