In September 2001, three burned circles of grass forming an isosceles triangle were found on a football field in Villiers-Le-Bacle. The discoverer was a prefect representative who noted the circles measured between 30 and 40 cm and were spaced about 120 meters apart. The gendarmerie investigation revealed nearby wood charcoal and numerous vehicle tracks, suggesting recent presence of itinerant people.
Initially classified as unexplained by the GEIPAN, the case was later reviewed. Today, the GEIPAN only handles cases involving an aerial or spatial phase, meaning sightings that include objects in the sky. In this case, there were no testimonies of an aerial phenomenon, so it was deemed irrelevant for their analysis. The case was ultimately reclassified as "C", indicating it could not be processed due to the lack of aerial information.
