On August 12, 2006, a witness in Saint-Jean-de-Monts observed two luminous spheres above the ocean. They were moving at low altitude with low intensity, but suddenly their brightness increased and they vanished in a fraction of a second. The testimony was reported years later, in 2008, and no other accounts of this phenomenon were recorded. Although it resembles what is known as "flying lanterns," the lack of precise details makes a definitive classification difficult.
The observation, brief but clear, was not corroborated by other witnesses. The GEIPAN classified it as case C, indicating that a conventional explanation cannot be ruled out, but neither can an unusual nature. This type of testimony, though rare, is valuable for better understanding phenomena that remain unexplained.
