On May 1, 2008, a fisherman on a French beach observed a slow-moving white light in the sky. The object appeared to come from the island of Yeu and was heading east. The witness lost sight of the light as it entered the clouds. Investigators from GEIPAN considered that the characteristics of the observation matched those of a Thai lantern, known to move with the wind. The date and time are consistent with this explanation, suggesting it could have been launched from a boat. The northward deviation was likely due to the effect of the coastline on low-altitude wind flow.
