Summary

On December 6, 2008, a witness in Strasbourg observed three red glowing points moving silently and in a straight line from northwest to southeast. The witness managed to take three photos before the objects disappeared behind a building. Later, a fourth object with the same characteristics was seen. The observation lasted about 15 minutes. Although it seemed mysterious, the features matched those of traditional Chinese lanterns, often released during festivals. Given that the date was the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, a widely celebrated event in Alsace, it was considered very likely that this was a case of mistaken identity.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B, indicating a highly probable explanation. The slow movement, straight trajectory, and color are consistent with lanterns, which drift with the wind. This type of case is common in winter, especially in areas with strong festive traditions. While the details may seem enigmatic, the most reasonable explanation points to a completely earthly and cultural phenomenon.
