On December 21, 2008, a driver and his passenger observed a luminous phenomenon in the sky near Saint-Pierre-Quiberon. They saw three circles of yellow-orange light moving silently and in the direction of the wind. Initially intrigued, the witnesses stopped to observe for several minutes. The description of the lights, along with the weather and time, led investigators to consider the possibility that they were Thai lanterns.
Although the witness was not convinced by this explanation, the GEIPAN investigators classified the case as "B", indicating a probable observation of lanterns. The lights matched the typical characteristics of this type of object, including their shape, color, and movement. Although it was unusual to see such a phenomenon on a Sunday at 7:46 PM, the possibility of a trial before a larger launch during the end-of-year celebrations was considered.
