On the night of December 16, 2008, two witnesses in Saint-Pierre observed a luminous phenomenon moving rapidly and erratically. The bright red light was silent and occasionally hidden behind clouds, adding to the mystery. Although no other testimonies were recorded that night, it coincided with the period when many witnesses reported seeing traditional Thai lanterns across the island. These, known as "lanternes de vux" or "Chinese balloons," are common in La Réunion during festivities. It is likely the witnesses mistook one of these lanterns for an unidentified object.
