On July 14, 2009, a witness in Piriac-sur-Mer observed a bright red-orange object silently moving from west to east across a clear sky. The observation lasted about 10 minutes, with the object maintaining a straight trajectory. Due to its color, speed, and direction matching the wind of the night, GEIPAN investigators considered the possibility of a sky lantern. After reflection, the witness admitted the object was likely a Chinese lantern, hard to identify in the dark. The case was eventually classified as type A, meaning explained as a known phenomenon.
