Summary

On July 11, 2010, a witness in La Bohalle (Maine-et-Loire) observed around 2:20 AM a series of red and orange luminous objects silently moving across the sky. The witness described first light streaks and then several disks, capturing images for about 15 to 20 minutes. The photographs showed objects that, when zoomed in, seemed to confirm the presence of multiple moving lights. Although initially it might seem like an unexplained phenomenon, the investigation pointed to a more earthly explanation: the lights matched the typical characteristics of so-called "flying lanterns". This hypothesis was reinforced when the mayor of the village found partially burned lanterns on the town hall parking lot, suggesting a festive or cultural event, possibly linked to Thai-style celebrations.

The case was classified as "A" by the GEIPAN, indicating that it was considered an explained phenomenon. Although the night observation appeared mysterious, the material evidence and coherence with known phenomena led to a clear resolution. This type of case, although unusual, is common in the UFO database and often has conventional explanations once investigated. The La Bohalle experience shows how an impactful night observation can have a simple explanation, as long as it is rigorously examined and all possibilities are considered.
