On August 28, 2010, a driver and his passenger in Chapelle-Saint-Aubin observed eight orange balls in the sky. These moved in a quincunx formation at about 500 meters altitude, following a north to southeast trajectory. The phenomenon lasted around 4 minutes, without producing any sound or smell. The description of the lights, their orderly movement, and the time of the event align with the characteristics of Thai floating lanterns.
The gendarmerie recorded the incident on 1410/2010. Meteorological data indicated a northwest wind, supporting the observed direction. Although the possibility of lighter-than-air objects like balloons or lanterns is considered, the precise formation and low altitude suggest a conventional explanation. However, the lack of noise and the regular movement leave room for doubt.
