On April 19, 2011, two people in Rochejean (Doubs) observed from a terrace a slow, straight-line passage of a bright white sphere above the crest of the Risoux massif. The main witness recorded a video, but the poor quality of the footage—shaky at maximum zoom and full of artifacts—did not allow the gendarmerie to make a clear interpretation and failed to capture the actual observation. Despite the unusual appearance of the object, the direction and time of the observation matched exactly with the passage of the International Space Station (ISS). This case was classified as "A" by the GEIPAN, meaning it was clearly identified.
Confusion between known space objects and unexplained phenomena is common in ufology. In this case, the poor quality of the recording and the witness's visual perception led to a description that fit the popular image of a UFO. However, thanks to precise astronomical data, investigators were able to determine that the observed object was simply the ISS. This example highlights the importance of scientific data and the need to carefully analyze observations before drawing conclusions.
