On June 12, 2011, several people on the beach of Punaaiua in Tahiti observed a luminous phenomenon in the sky. An object with a very bright red light was moving quickly before suddenly stopping and disappearing vertically into the night. Although only one testimony was reported, it included photographs of moderate quality and consistency. Researchers from GEIPAN considered the possibility that it was a Tibetan lantern, but the unexpected behavior of the object, especially its abrupt stop, makes this explanation too fragile. Without precise data on local wind conditions, the case remains provisionally classified as C, pending further information.
