On January 18, 2012, around 10:45 PM, and on January 19, near midnight, a couple observed two groups of orange fireballs moving silently at a constant speed. The description of these lights immediately made one think of Chinese lanterns. Although such observations are more common on weekends, the Chinese New Year on January 23 was also considered as a possible cause. According to the weather in Bordeaux, the wind was coming from the south, but witnesses reported movement toward Bordeaux, suggesting a southwest wind. The lanterns could have been launched from one of the many villas or restaurants in the southwest of La Teste.
