Summary

On April 14, 2013, a witness in Plaisir (France) observed about fifteen very bright points moving across the sky. The objects were traveling in the same direction and made no noise. The observation lasted about twenty seconds. Four minutes before sunset, the witness saw the same points, disorganized, moving toward the southeast and flashing. Although unusual, GEIPAN investigators concluded that these could be metallic balloons (Mylar) inflated with helium. These balloons can rise to great heights and remain in the air for several hours, moving with air currents. Although the wind on the ground was coming from the south, meteorological data showed that at a certain altitude the wind was from the northwest, which matched the observation. The case was classified as "B", indicating that it was likely a sighting of festive helium balloons.
