Summary

On May 25, 2013, a witness in Haute-Garonne observed a flickering light with a reddish halo moving slowly from the west. The light disappeared into a cloud after rising in the sky. The witness described a white, red, and yellow blinking light, observed for two minutes with no noise. The video shows a yellow light surrounded by red. Meteorological data indicate the wind was blowing toward the observer, consistent with a Chinese lantern launched one to two kilometers away. Private celebrations often include such lantern launches on weekends, and the flickering could be due to unstable combustion. The GEIPAN concluded the case was likely a Chinese lantern.
