On July 26, 2013, a witness in Caudry (France) observed an orange ball moving eastward. A few minutes later, a similar object was seen again. The witness took a photo showing a gray circle, which the report suggests is likely the reflection of the camera flash on a dust particle. The moon was not visible at the time, as it had not yet risen. Additionally, the wind was very light and coming from the north, limiting the dispersion of any airborne object.
The GEIPAN concluded that the sightings were consistent with two Thai lanterns released near the location. Due to the very light wind, the lanterns moved little and extinguished after a few minutes. Although the witness believed they had seen an unidentified object, the weather conditions and the nature of the lights suggest a terrestrial explanation.
