🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
A witness reported seeing white or yellow lights in the sky for a few minutes one weekend night. Initially thought to be Thai lanterns, the movement described by the witness seemed inconsistent with wind direction. The GEIPAN contacted the witness for clarification and found that the lights moved southwest, which matched the north wind recorded in Chartres. Additionally, a school party in Voves on June 27 involved lantern releases, and another witness photographed white lights. With this information, the case was classified as "B"—likely caused by Thai lanterns.
Thai lanterns are usually yellow or orange, but when viewed from the side, they can appear white. The testimony, combined with weather data and the context of the school event, supports this explanation. Although the movement of the lights initially seemed odd, clarifications made the situation clearer. The GEIPAN concluded there were no signs of unexplained phenomena, just a common optical illusion and weather conditions.
