🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On May 17, 2014, a witness and his wife in Saint-Esteve, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, observed an unusual luminous phenomenon. Between five and six red spheres appeared in the sky coming from the northwest and moved toward the southeast. Shortly after, a second wave of about fifteen identical spheres was seen. The movement was slow and silent, which generated curiosity. The GEIPAN classified this case as "B", meaning it is very likely that these were Thai lanterns. These objects, typical of certain celebrations, move slowly with the wind and are usually orange in color. Since the phenomenon was not particularly unusual and the northwest wind was confirmed by METEOCIEL, the GEIPAN did not pursue further investigation, as the case was not considered suspicious.
