Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche 2017, Object with orange trail

Summary

On July 1, 2017, several witnesses in Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche observed an object leaving orange trails in the clear sky. One of them filmed the event and was surprised to see other objects with similar trails, though on different trajectories. No sound was heard during the observation. The witness initially thought it might be space debris entering the atmosphere. However, the video clearly showed it was an airplane. What most surprised the witness was the short orange trail, explained by the sunlight from the setting sun still illuminating the plane's altitude. The apparent speed of the object also caused confusion, though the video did not show anything unusual. Since everything pointed to an airplane, the GEIPAN classified the case as such.
