In February 2012, a witness in Nancy (France) observed a luminous elongated object moving silently in a straight line across the sky. The phenomenon lasted about two minutes, during which the witness managed to take photos. Although there were no other witnesses, the description of the object and its trajectory drew attention. The GEIPAN, the French organization responsible for investigating unidentified aerial phenomena, concluded that it was a condensation trail from a distant airplane illuminated by the setting sun. This type of phenomenon is common in clear skies shortly after sunset or before sunrise, and can explain many observations that initially seem unexplainable.
