On July 28, 2014, a witness in Cap-d'Ail observed and photographed two dark objects moving in a straight line over the sea. As they approached, the witness went inside his apartment and then came out to record a video. Although the objects appeared to move in an unusual way, GEIPAN investigators suggested they could be helium balloons, similar to those seen at fairs. These balloons, made of reflective material, can appear dark if the witness is backlit by the sun. Additionally, the double appearance of the objects could be due to a perspective where one was behind the other. The photo suggests a small angular size, consistent with a balloon about 70 cm at 200 meters distance. Although the wind was unstable, the observed movement matched the behavior of a balloon on the breeze.
