🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
A witness in Saint-Come-du-Mont saw a white and yellow light in the sky on November 12, 2014. Although the observer claimed the weather was clear, meteorological records showed rain in Cherbourg and showers in Caen. At 8 a.m., the newly risen sun was almost directly in front of the driver, possibly obscured by morning mist. At that time, Flightradar24 recorded several commercial planes flying at high altitude from west to east. Their contrails were visible about 120 km away, appearing as short, bright comet-like streaks due to perspective and sunlight. The GEIPAN classified the case as "A", attributing it to aircraft contrails.
The witness's description matched the characteristics of aircraft contrails early in the morning. These contrails, illuminated by the rising sun, can appear yellow, orange, or even red. At that distance, the apparent movement is minimal, which can confuse observers. The report concludes that the observed phenomenon was not an unknown object, but a common atmospheric phenomenon explained by the physics of light and high-altitude aircraft flight.
