Summary

On September 13, 2015, two people in Nice observed five orange or yellow points of light silently ascending in the sky. Three of them formed a triangle, which caught the witnesses' attention. Although only one testimony was collected, the GEIPAN investigators analyzed several key elements. The color, shape, movement, and duration of the observation were considered compatible with traditional paper lights, known as Thai lanterns. Additionally, the fact that it was a Sunday evening, a date suitable for celebrations, and the wind direction aligned with what would be expected from a lantern launch.

After evaluating all the data, the GEIPAN classified the case as "B," indicating a probable observation of paper lanterns. There was no noise, and the disappearance of the objects was explained by the end of their lifespan. The proximity of open-air facilities suitable for launching such lights also supported this explanation. Although the witnesses did not immediately identify the lights, the investigation concluded there were no signs of an unexplained phenomenon. This case illustrates how UFO phenomena often have conventional explanations when carefully analyzed.
