On September 26, 2015, a witness in the Oise region observed about twenty lights in the sky, moving like street lamps. These orange lights crossed the sky in a few minutes during a weekend night. Although only one testimony was collected, the description of the lights suggests they could be Thai lanterns. These are often released during private celebrations and their movement aligns with the wind direction recorded in the area.
The GEIPAN classified the case as "B", indicating a likely observation of Thai lanterns. The witnesses initially thought of these lanterns but didn't understand why one appeared to move faster. This could be explained by differences in wind speed at different altitudes or by a perspective effect. A closer object seems to move faster than a more distant one, even if both are traveling at the same speed. In this case, the last lantern, released after the others, hadn't reached the same altitude and thus appeared to move faster.
