An unusual case recorded in Montayral, France, on October 23, 2015, describes the observation of a black, stationary object in the sky. A witness, walking with his dog near an airfield, noticed a peculiar silhouette resembling a circular arc that remained completely still for 20 minutes. The object made no noise and vanished suddenly when the witness looked away. Despite a detailed account, there were no other witnesses or photographic evidence.
GEIPAN investigators considered several hypotheses, such as airplanes, helicopters, hot-air balloons, or even visual issues with the witness, but no conventional explanation proved satisfactory. The most plausible hypothesis was a hot-air balloon, although it faced contradictions, especially regarding the described shape and the object’s sudden disappearance. Ultimately, the case was classified as D1, meaning an unexplained phenomenon of moderate strangeness.
