🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On October 23, 2015, a couple in Montady, France, observed an unusual aerial phenomenon. They saw three glowing spheres emitting long white threads, along with tiny particles that seemed illuminated by diodes. The witness took photographs and described the event in detail. However, the GEIPAN concluded that this was a natural phenomenon known as "ballooning," where young spiders use silk threads to travel through the air. These threads, known as "fils de la Vierge," are visible under certain weather conditions, such as clear skies and a light breeze. The photos taken by the witness match this phenomenon, and the observed spheres could be clusters of spiders. The case was classified as "B," indicating a plausible natural explanation.
This phenomenon is common in autumn, when conditions are ideal for spiders to release their threads. These fine threads are only visible when charged with moisture or viewed at an angle, which explains why they disappeared when approached. After analyzing the photos and testimony, the GEIPAN concluded there were no unexplained elements. Thus, the case was closed with a fully scientific explanation, without the need for extraterrestrial hypotheses.
