On December 27, 2015, a witness in Nord, France, observed two white circular shapes flying one behind the other. The trajectory was from south to north, and one of them showed a red point that turned off after two seconds. The sighting lasted less than 10 seconds. Although there were no other witnesses, the GEIPAN considered it could be typical Thai lanterns. The movement direction matched the wind recorded in the area, and although it seemed fast, it was consistent with wind speeds, considering possible errors in estimating distance or altitude.
Thai lanterns are often released in large numbers and can appear as unidentified flying objects when seen from afar. The GEIPAN classified the case as "B", indicating a high probability that it was this type of object. Although the observation was brief, meteorological data and the visual description support the conventional explanation. This case shows how natural or cultural phenomena can be mistaken for aerial anomalies.
