In September 2012, two witnesses in Allier observed a formation of glowing spheres moving silently in a straight line across the night sky. These appeared at regular intervals and seemed to gather above a forest, prompting the witnesses to investigate. However, by the time they arrived, the spheres had vanished. After investigation, the GEIPAN concluded these were Thai lanterns. Lit by candles, these lanterns float silently and follow wind patterns. Weather conditions matched the description, though the witnesses overestimated the speed.
The key was perspective: the lanterns appeared to cluster on the horizon, creating an optical illusion. Additionally, the night coincided with a celebration, explaining the sequential launch of the lights. As the candles burned out, the lanterns disappeared. What initially seemed mysterious was explained by natural and cultural factors.
