🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On August 19, 2017, a witness and his wife observed a formation of white points in the sky over Caumont-sur-Durance. The objects moved silently in a straight line at a speed the witness compared to that of an airplane. The phenomenon lasted about 3 to 4 minutes and moved southward. The witness ruled out drones, aircraft, or space debris, but the GEIPAN concluded it was likely Thai lanterns. The key was the wind direction and speed, which matched the observed movement. In summer, weekends are common for lantern releases, supporting this explanation.
