🇫🇷 GEIPAN / CNES
On September 10, 2017, a witness in Dordogne observed a triangular object moving silently from west to east. Initially, they saw an orange light in the sky that soon approached and revealed a clearly triangular shape. The witness used binoculars and described the object with bright white edges and a straight-line trajectory. The phenomenon lasted about 15 seconds before it suddenly disappeared, possibly hidden by a cloud. No other witnesses were reported, but the GEIPAN concluded it was likely a Thai lantern.
The case features align with a lantern: orange color, eastward direction, and a festive summer evening. Although the witness doubted it, the GEIPAN explains that lanterns can fly alone, with consistent speeds and varied shapes, including triangular. Additionally, the wind that day favored an eastward movement. Therefore, the case was classified as B, meaning explained as a Thai lantern.
