On December 15, 2017, two witnesses in Saint-Medard-en-Jalles observed three very bright points aligned in the sky moving from west to east. The phenomenon lasted about 30 seconds and was notable for its precision and brightness. After investigation, the GEIPAN determined that the objects were the Dragon spacecraft resupplying the International Space Station, along with two protective elements of its solar generators. The mission had been launched from Florida two hours earlier, which explains why the three objects were still very close together.
Although it might initially seem unusual, this case was easily identified thanks to previously published similar images online. In this case, only three objects were visible because the rocket's upper stage had already performed its reentry maneuver. The GEIPAN classified the case as type A, indicating a clear and verifiable explanation.
