In March 1984, several residents of La Foa in New Caledonia reported sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). The sightings occurred on different days and times, complicating the investigation. The gendarmerie was notified on March 7th following rumors of repeated sightings. Testimonies included a white glowing ball, a luminous band, and a slowly moving object. While some cases were deemed potentially unexplained, others found rational explanations, such as confusion with the planet Venus. The investigation emphasized the importance of evaluating each testimony separately, as lack of precise details and the influence of rumors affected the reliability of some accounts.
The final classification of the case was C, indicating no conclusive evidence was found. However, the investigation highlighted how factors like memory, perception, and communication among witnesses can influence the interpretation of events. Despite the ambiguity, the case serves as an example of how UFO archives are reviewed with new methods and criteria to improve the quality of conclusions.
