🇬🇧 Ministry of Defence
Declassified documents from the UK Ministry of Defence contain records of unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings dating back to the 1950s. These files show how the British government has handled UFO reports, primarily from a national security perspective. Until 1967, most UFO files were destroyed after five years, but due to increased public interest, a decision was made to preserve them for transfer to the Public Record Office in Kew after thirty years. Although many older files have been lost, the surviving ones reveal that the Ministry of Defence was only interested in sightings that posed a potential threat to UK airspace. Today, UFO reports are still analyzed, but only to assess possible hostile incursions, not to determine their exact nature.
The files also include letters from concerned citizens questioning the lack of transparency and the possibility of unknown or extraterrestrial technology. Despite popular theories, the UK government has consistently stated there is no evidence that UFOs pose a real threat. However, some testimonies and press reports from 1998 suggest there are cases that remain unexplained. While the Ministry of Defence has not confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial technology, the files indicate efforts to investigate unexplained aerial phenomena, especially when linked to military or energy facilities.
